Prosthodontics is the dental specialty concerned with the restoration and replacement of teeth using dental prostheses — any artificial device that replaces or supplements missing or damaged tooth structure. Prosthodontists complete two to three additional years of specialty training after dental school, developing advanced skills in the design, fabrication, and fitting of both fixed restorations (crowns, bridges, veneers) and removable prostheses (dentures, partial dentures, implant-supported overdentures).
Prosthodontists manage the most complex tooth restoration and replacement cases. Their expertise is most valuable in: full-mouth reconstruction (restoring all or most teeth, typically due to severe decay, erosion, or trauma); implant-supported restorations involving multiple teeth or full arches; complex denture cases where fit, aesthetics, and function are difficult to achieve; aesthetically demanding cases requiring precise colour and shape matching; and cases complicated by TMJ issues or significantly altered bite relationships. They work closely with oral surgeons, periodontists, and orthodontists in multidisciplinary treatment planning.
For most patients needing a single crown or a straightforward partial denture, a general dentist provides excellent care. A prosthodontist becomes valuable when: multiple teeth are being replaced or restored simultaneously; the treatment involves the bite relationship and jaw function, not just individual teeth; previous restorative work has failed or produced unsatisfactory results; the patient has unrealistic expectations about aesthetics that need careful management; or when a case requires the level of technical precision that comes from specialty training. Many patients are referred to prosthodontists by their general dentist when case complexity warrants it.
