Dental enamel is the translucent outer layer that covers the visible crown of each tooth. It is the hardest biological material in the human body — harder than bone — and is composed of approximately 96% mineral (primarily hydroxyapatite crystals). Despite its hardness, enamel has one critical weakness: it is dissolved by acid. Acidic foods, beverages, and the acids produced by bacteria in dental plaque all slowly erode enamel in a process called demineralisation.
Unlike bone, enamel cannot regenerate once lost. Tooth enamel is produced by cells called ameloblasts, which are active only during tooth development in childhood. Once the tooth erupts and the ameloblasts are shed, the body has no mechanism to produce new enamel. This is why acid erosion, abrasion, and decay cause permanent structural loss. Fluoride can remineralise early surface damage and strengthen the enamel mineral structure, but it cannot rebuild enamel that has physically worn or dissolved away.
Limiting the frequency of acidic and sugary foods and drinks is the most important dietary step for enamel preservation — it is the repeated exposure throughout the day, not a single serving, that causes the most erosion. After consuming acidic foods or drinks, rinsing with water helps neutralise the acid; wait 30 minutes before brushing to avoid scrubbing softened enamel. Using fluoride toothpaste, drinking fluoridated water, and having professional fluoride applications strengthens enamel at the microscopic level. Grinding (bruxism) causes mechanical attrition of enamel and warrants a nightguard.
