Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a three-dimensional imaging technology that produces detailed cross-sectional and volumetric images of the teeth, jaw, sinuses, nerve pathways, and surrounding structures. Unlike a conventional 2D X-ray, which captures a flat shadow image, a CBCT scan allows the clinician to view anatomy from any angle and at any depth — inside and around the tooth and jaw in true 3D.
CBCT is not a routine imaging tool for most dental visits — it provides significantly more radiation than standard X-rays and is reserved for situations where 2D imaging is insufficient. Common uses include: pre-surgical implant planning (to measure available bone volume and locate the inferior alveolar nerve precisely); complex root canal evaluations (to identify extra canals, root fractures, or periapical lesions not visible on standard X-rays); orthodontic treatment planning (to assess jaw development, impacted teeth, and airway); evaluation of jaw cysts, tumours, or injuries; and diagnosis of TMJ disorders.
A CBCT scan delivers more radiation than a standard panoramic X-ray but substantially less than a medical CT scan of the head. The American Dental Association recommends CBCT only when the diagnostic benefit justifies the dose — not as a routine screening tool. If your dentist or specialist recommends one, they should explain the specific clinical need. The scans are fast (typically 10–40 seconds of actual exposure), and the detailed information they provide frequently changes treatment planning in ways that improve outcomes.
