Braces and clear aligners straighten teeth and correct bite problems. Modern orthodontic treatment is more comfortable and less visible than ever before.
Orthodontic treatment moves teeth into better positions using controlled, gradual pressure over time. The goal is not just cosmetic โ properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, create a better bite, and reduce wear over a lifetime.
Traditional metal braces are the most common and least expensive option. Metal brackets are bonded to teeth and connected by a wire that is periodically tightened. Modern metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than older versions.
Ceramic (tooth-coloured) braces work the same way as metal braces but use tooth-coloured or clear brackets that are less visible. They cost more than metal and are slightly more prone to staining.
Clear aligners (Invisalign and similar) are removable, transparent plastic trays that gradually shift teeth. They are nearly invisible and can be removed for eating and cleaning. Best suited for mild to moderate cases. Cost is comparable to or higher than ceramic braces.
Lingual braces are attached to the back (tongue side) of teeth, making them invisible from the front. More expensive and can affect speech initially.
There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment. Adults make up a significant and growing portion of orthodontic patients. Treatment is equally effective in adults, though it may take slightly longer than in adolescents whose bones are still developing.
Many dental insurance plans include an orthodontic benefit โ typically a lifetime maximum of $1,000โ$2,000 applied once. This benefit usually applies only to patients under 18 or 19, though some plans extend coverage to adults. Check your specific plan before starting treatment.
