It was created by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to standardise provider identification across the US healthcare system.
Every dentist, dental specialist, dental hygienist, and dental practice (as an organisation) that submits insurance claims in the US is required to have one. There are approximately 200,000 active dental NPI holders in the US.
Why Does It Exist?
Before the NPI system, different insurers used different internal numbers to identify providers — creating confusion and errors. The NPI creates a single, universal identifier that works across all insurance companies, government programs, and healthcare systems. It is the dental equivalent of a Social Security Number for providers.
What Can You Learn From an NPI?
The official NPI Registry (NPPES), maintained by CMS, is a free public database. You can look up any NPI number and verify:
- The provider's full legal name
- Their primary practice address
- Their dental specialty classification
- The type of provider (individual vs. organisation)
- Whether their NPI is active or deactivated
